Chapter 14: Preparations

Rain drenched the narrow dirt track leading to the cabin. The thick and eerily silent surrounding woods pressed in from all sides. A lone black BMW with dark-tinted windows made its way through the fog-laden trail to the clearing with the cabin. Pulling to a halt, the car door swung open, and a middle-aged man wearing khaki pants, a green raincoat, and white tennis shoes climbed out. His hair was gray and thin, and he wore rimless glasses. Bruno watched him through the curtains as he opened the BMW’s trunk and removed a gray plastic tub. Without a word, he walked to the cabin’s front porch and set the tub down. Then he returned to the car, closed the trunk, climbed into the driver’s seat, and drove away.

Bruno watched him leave, then stepped out onto the porch dressed in black jeans, black cowboy boots, and a gray flannel over a black T-shirt. His dark hair was in a ponytail. He carried the tub into the kitchen and placed it on the wooden dining table. Inside were many small boxes. It took a few minutes to open them all and arrange the contents across the table. As he finished unpacking, Raison entered the kitchen.

“That was the guy? Did he bring everything?” he asked.

“Yeah, he brought it all,” Bruno confirmed.

They both stood for a moment, taking in the table’s contents.

“Ten cell phones and chargers and ten SIM cards,” Bruno listed. “Two tracking devices with matching weatherproof cases and two more SIM cards for those. The SIM cards are set up on cloned cellular accounts. They will be good for maybe 30 days, but once the account owners get their bills, they’ll call their carriers, and the cards will probably get deactivated.”

“This,” he said, holding up a device, “is the latest wireless trail camera. It has motion detection, night vision, everything. You can mount this anywhere and it’ll record HD video both day and night.”

“And this,” Bruno continued, lifting a black nylon tool bag, “is a professional locksmith set. We can use it to duplicate keys.”

“Is that the hard shit?” Raison asked, pointing at a long cardboard box with several red plastic tubes inside. The tubes were threaded on each end as if to screw together.

With a big grin, Bruno reached into the box and plucked out one of the red tubes.

“It sure is. Gel dynamite. They use it for seismic surveying. If you put a few of these together with the right ignition source, it’ll open any door we need.”

“We’ll have to test all this. Store the dynamite in the barn so we don’t get blown up,” Raison said. “Help me gather the wolves. It’s time to get to work.”
